New Zealand Symphony Orchestra

Last Tuesday Chris from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra came down from Wellington to talk to us about music and how to compose music. We started just by clapping and stomping a rhythm. Then we played around with the instruments. It sounded like there were rhinos stampeding, it was hard to hear your own voice! After that we had to brainstorm a topic for the music. There were a few ideas: a couple were bedrooms, frost and flying. In the end we based the music on flying. We were split into four different groups: helicopters, clouds, birds and planes. I was in the plane when first the plane took off the engines rumbled to life, the blades started spinning and all the other sounds started. The bird group started with the tweeting of birds, then the soft sound of clouds drifting past turned into heavy rain. The helicopter started and flew into the distance and finally the plane started and stopped. He is a pitcher of my group playing:

We Should have more time to play at school!

We should have more time to play at school!

I strongly disagree about having more time to play at school! Do you want to spend all your time playing? Long breaks mean more playground issues! Plus we come to school to learn don’t we? Teachers can see when we need a break. So why have more time to play when we don’t need it?

Long breaks = playground issues

Firstly, long breaks equal playground issues. If we had more time to play there would be a lot more issues. There are already enough issues. No one likes being involved in disagreements and arguments and if we had more breaks there will just be more of those. Plus playground equipment can get damaged if we over use it meaning the school will have to pay for reapers. Also it  gives more chance to get hurt which is not nice, but can also lead to time out of school for recovery meaning we miss some time at school.

We come to school to learn

Everyone knows we come to school to learn, so why do we waste that time? Parents spend lots of money on our education. Why waste that? As fun as playing is, less learning can mean later in life we might struggle with the career we wanted. Nothing comes for free. We have to work for it and wasting our learning time will not help us achieve what we dream about. Also we can interact with our friends in class while we are on topic. We can talk about the learning, give each other ideas and that little push to help us on our way. Plus we might forget things over brakes if we have long breaks meaning we have to relearn something which we wouldn’t normally need to.

Teachers can see when a brain break is required

Finally, teachers can see when we need a quick break to help refresh our minds. If we are really struggling teachers can see when a brain break is required meaning we don’t need big long breaks. Big breaks would just waste our learning time. We may as well not come to school if we spend more time playing then learning. There are many ways to refresh our mind like listening to music. Listening to music is better than having long breaks or lots of little ones because we can be learning while listening to music. It can perk us up if we are not enjoying learning, because even though most of the time learning is fun everyone has something they don’t enjoy. I love learning. It is awesome, but even though I love some things that doesn’t mean I like everything I find my spelling difficult.

For these reasons, I think that we don’t need more time to play. Teachers can see when a break is needed. We come to school to learn not to play. Plus long breaks can equal playground issues and who likes those?

Children have to go to school on their birthday!

Children have to go to school on their birthday!

Do you want your children to be happy on their birthday? Most children hate wharekura (school) meaning they don’t want to have to go to wharekura (school) on their birthday (Personally I love school). But some kids may prefer to spend their birthday with their whanau instead of friends. They may consider their birthday as a special event, don’t get me wrong it is. You only turn that age once. Plus if your birthday falls on a weekend or holiday you can’t go to school.

May prefer to spend birthday with whanau (family)

Firstly, some kids may want to spend their birthday with their whanau (family). They may have fun plans for the day like going to the swimming pool, playground or even just chilling at home. Their whanau (family) may want some quality time with them on their birthday or they may want quality time with their family. They might have planned a fun vacation as a birthday treat, but they can’t be in two places at once!

Some children believe a birthday is a special event

Secondly some kids may believe their birthday is a special event. Kids may visit loved ones to celebrate with them? Some children may have whanau (family) visiting for a short while and want to be with them instead. Why have whanau (family) over for a short time if they are too busy at wharekura (school) to hang out with them. Kids need breaks and some kids may want a break from wharekura (school) to celebrate their birthday.

If your birthday falls on a weekend or holiday you can’t go to wharekura (school)

Finally if your birthday falls on a weekend or holiday you can’t go to wharekura (school). It is not fair if you have to go to wharekura (school) on your birthday even if there is no wharekura (school) on. Other kids may think it’s unfair if they get ahead in their work because they don’t have work to do at school. Plus brakes would be no fun if they were the only ones at wharekura (school) because there would be no one to play with.

In conclusion, kids should not have to go to school on their birthday. Kids may prefer to spend their birthday with whanau (family), some children believe their birthday is a special event and want to spend it at home. Plus if your birthday falls on a weekend or holiday they can’t go to wharekura (school)!
